On February 3, 2009, Allison Huff, an 11 year old 6th grader was diagnosed with Restrictive Cardiomyopathy, a rare form of heart disease for which there is no cure.   The only solution is a heart transplant.   That will likely mean the following:

· A 6 to 8 week wait for the heart.  That’s the average.  It could take longer or it could happen today.

· The heart has to match your blood type and a number of other conditions to be received.

· The transplant surgery takes between 6 and 8 hours.   Recovery in the hospital is anywhere from 10 days to 3 weeks.

· Allie will be on medication for the rest of her life.  She will also have to go in for frequent testing,  including catheterizations and biopsy’s of the new heart.

As you can imagine, the cost for the hospital stay, the transplant surgery, and the post-recovery medical bills will be enormous.   They could well exceed the coverage limits of the Huff’s medical insurance.   This is a lifetime commitment to keeping Allie well and avoiding another heart transplant.

Text Box: What’s in a Name?
You might be wondering why we chose this name for the Fund and the Blog: "Heart of a Warrior." The heart part is easy, Allison has heart problems. The Warrior part, though has special meaning. Yes, Allison is a fighter. She might not look big on the outside but she has has a lot of fight in her. Anyone who has ever sat with her at the dinner table can attest to that---especially when we are trying to get her to eat vegetables!.

The word Warrior has a special place in Allison's world. She is absolutely in love with the Warrior series of books about clans of cats. She's read every book---there are a lot of them, trust us---and she's started at least 2 fan web sites.

So, "Heart of a Warrior" is the name of this fund and our blog. It’s what she has—the heart of a Warrior--whether we’re talking about fictional cats or a kid waiting for a heart transplant. She is an inspiration to us all and we so much appreciate you joining us on our journey, if even for a little while.
